Deployment and Testing new NPfIT solutions

The National Programme for IT (NPfIT) is being implemented across the NHS in England and includes an extensive range of new IT systems that will support new processes and working practices for both clinical and non-clinical staff, including:

  • The NHS Care Records Service (CRS);
  • Choose and Book (CaB);
  • Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP);
  • Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS);
  • Radiology Information System (RIS);
  • National Network for the NHS (N3);
  • Contact (central e-mail and directory service);
  • IT Supporting GP’s.

WCI believes that the new model of local deployment which sees the Strategic Health Authorities taking a more active role, is far more robust than the current model that relies on the Local Service Providers.  Greater control will be in the hands of the NHS with the use of people who understand healthcare and healthcare IT.

A key element in planning for successful deployment is the thoroughness of the product testing. The structure of the CfH contract and the attendant arms length relationship between software supplier and the NHS Trust makes the testing and certification of product readiness a particular challenge.
