WCI and Microsoft programme management research

Successful programme management is perhaps the greatest challenge facing construction companies today. There has never been a time when budgets have been under more scrutiny, and project managers have faced greater pressure to ensure multiple activities arrive on time and within budget.

With media attention focused on such grand construction projects as Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and Wembley Stadium, the industry is more aware than ever of the money at stake when programme management doesn’t go to plan.

For construction companies, the right solution for managing activities will ensure visibility, collaboration, and compliance across multiple activities. However, within the industry, many organisations are yet to deploy systems that comprehensively deliver in all three areas.

This is one of the main conclusions from the WCI survey on programme management, which questioned leading, global companies within the sectorThe key findings showed that 87 per cent of respondents wanted a solution that controls programme management resources and expenditure more effectively.

Over half of respondents said they could significantly improve collaboration among project teams, and there was a general consensus that important data relating to different activities within a programme had to be ‘hand cranked’.

As the attached White Paper shows, the right programme management solution is out there, for short-term benefits and long-term agility. The deliverables from such a solution must include at least the following

  • A robust infrastructure that guarantees flexible levels of control.
  • Management of multiple programme portfolios
  • Adaptable workflow and audit management
  • Rapid redeployment of resources.
  • Standardised project control and reporting mechanisms
  • Tracking of all programme data against targets.

In addition, for maximum business value, the new system of programme management must integrate with existing software investments. The importance of this cannot be overstated. With a high level of integration, a company can capture immediate efficiency gains and allow project managers to establish a solid foundation on which to build better customer relationships.
